Dartmouth College Transfer Term Information

Can someone explain how the transfer term works at Dartmouth? I'm considering transferring there and want to know how the academic calendar might impact the timing and my application process.

Sure, happy to help! Dartmouth College follows a quarter system, known as the D-Plan, that accommodates the flexible scheduling needs of the students. Conveniently, this system is often more conducive to transfers in a way that traditional semesters are not, simply because of the increased number of entry points throughout the year.

Dartmouth's academic year is divided into four quarters: fall, winter, spring, and a summer term. Full-time undergraduates are usually expected to be enrolled for at least three of these four terms. One of the unique features of Dartmouth's calendar is that all sophomore students are required to be on campus for the summer term, when many juniors and seniors choose to take off for internships or other opportunities.

As a prospective transfer student, you'd likely be able to begin your studies at Dartmouth in any of these terms, not just in the fall. This flexibility can allow for a smoother transition and can also impact your application timeline. For instance, if you aim to start in the winter term, your application materials would be due earlier than if you were starting in the spring or summer terms.

Though specific dates might change slightly each year, in general, Dartmouth's transfer application deadlines are typically in March with final decisions sent to applicants by mid-May. However, it would be beneficial for you to check the school's official website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

One more thing to be aware of is graduation requirements. Transfer students, like all students at Dartmouth, are required to complete at least eight terms of full-time study, regardless of how many credits you are able to transfer.

Hope this helps! Best of luck with your transfer application process.
