Can you transfer to a UC school for engineering from Diablo Valley College?

I'm currently at Diablo Valley College and I want to transfer to a UC school for engineering. Has anyone else done this? I'd love to know what the process is like and any recommendations for preparing my transfer application.

Absolutely, transferring to a UC from Diablo Valley College is definitely possible. The UC system has implemented a comprehensive and robust transfer program to accommodate community college students including students from Diablo Valley College.

Starting with your academics, aim to maintain a strong GPA, which is one of the first factors that transfer admissions committees look at. UC Berkeley's College of Engineering, for instance, typically looks for a GPA around 3.5 or above for transfer applicants.

In addition, you should take advantage of the assistance provided by Diablo Valley College’s Transfer Center. They can provide advice on courses to take that will transfer conveniently to a UC system. There's also a program known as Assist.org which outlines the courses needed for specific majors at UC campuses. Use this tool to plan out your courses.

For engineering, ensure that you're completing the necessary prerequisite courses for your intended major. This typically means taking classes in calculus, physics, and other advanced STEM subjects.

Furthermore, getting involved in clubs, especially ones related to your intended major can be very beneficial. There are many engineering-focused clubs and organizations at Diablo Valley College, and activities like these can help show your dedication to your intended major.

When it comes time to apply, most UCs use a personal insight question system in lieu of a traditional personal statement. Be sure to answer these questions thoughtfully and truthfully, highlighting who you are, why you are passionate about engineering, and what you can bring to the UC campus of your choice.

Lastly, be sure to submit a Transfer Academic Update (TAU) in January. This is a UC application requirement. You will need to log into your UC application to enter your fall grades and update your spring course grades when they are available.

Remember that while admission to engineering programs at UC schools can be competitive, every year many transfer students successfully make the transition. Best of luck with your transfer journey!
