Community College Credits for UC General Electives

I'm considering transferring to a UC school and want to know if my community college credits will satisfy any UC general electives. How can I figure out which of my credits might be eligible for transfer as general electives?

You can identify which of your community college courses may be transferable as general electives to a UC (University of California) school through a couple of different resources.

The primary tool used for this purpose is a system called ASSIST, a database that provides clear information on how courses from California Community Colleges are articulated to the UC campuses. By browsing through this system, you'd be able to see which of your course credits from a specific community college may potentially satisfy general education requirements or major prerequisites at a specific UC campus.

You may also want to consult with an advisor at both your community college and potential UC transfer destination. They can assist you in understanding course equivalencies, especially if any of your courses are not listed on the ASSIST database.

Remember, when you transfer from a community college, the UC system grants junior standing to students who transfer in with 60 semester units (90 quarter units). To receive junior standing, you need to complete the following at the community college before transfer: 1) the majority of your general education courses, 2) any lower-division prerequisites for your intended major if they are offered at your community college.

Also, keep in mind that different campuses within the UC system may have different policies, so it is highly encouraged to research individual campuses as well. It may also be worth noting that in addition to general education requirements, some UC campuses/majors have "preparation for the major" courses, so be sure to take those into account when planning your schedule.

Remember to be proactive and plan during your time at community college to ensure a smooth transition!
