How does transfer credit work for UMich College of Engineering?

I'm thinking about transferring to the University of Michigan's College of Engineering. Can anyone explain how their transfer credit system works? I'm particularly curious about which credits transfer over smoothly.

The University of Michigan's College of Engineering evaluates transfer credit on a course-by-course basis. Their review process centers on determining whether the content and rigor of the courses you've completed align with what is offered at UMich. Here's a general overview of the transfer credit process:

1. Sending Transcripts: Start by sending your official transcripts from your current institution to UMich. Note that if you completed any college coursework while in high school, you should also send those transcripts.

2. Course Evaluation: After receiving your transcripts, the College of Engineering will begin the process of evaluating your courses. They mainly focus on whether the content and rigor of the courses align with those at UMich.

3. Determination of Credit Transfer: If your courses are deemed equivalent to UMich standards, they will likely transfer as specific UMich courses. If courses are deemed to be of sufficient rigor but don't exactly match a UMich course, they might transfer as departmental credits. This means that while they don't count as a specific course, they could still count towards departmental or general education requirements.

For engineering-specific courses, the transfer is usually seamless for courses taken at schools with ABET accredited programs. Non-engineering courses should also transfer smoothly if they are liberal arts courses from an accredited institution, provided they are academic and not vocational or remedial. For example, courses in English, Math, Chemistry, Physics, Economics usually transfer without issues.

If a course has no clear equivalent at UMich, it may not be transferred or it may be transferred as general elective credit. If you're unsure if a specific course you've taken will transfer over, you can use UMich's transfer credit equivalency tool to see if your current institution and courses have established equivalencies.

Keep in mind that there is a maximum limit on the number of transferable credits. For the College of Engineering, you have to complete at least 50 credits in residence at UMich.

Lastly remember that while credit may transfer, grades from your current institution will not factor into your UMich GPA.

In any case, it's always a good idea to check with the admissions office or a transfer advisor with specific questions about your situation. Every student's circumstance is unique, and they can provide you with the most accurate and relevant information for your case.
