Anyone Have Good College Transfer App Examples?

I'm applying to transfer between colleges and I'm nervous about writing my personal statement. Does anyone have examples of successful college transfer apps to help me get started? Any tips on what should definitely be included?

There are a number of key elements you'll want to include in your transfer personal statement. First of all, remember that this isn't a redo on your first-year personal statement. The aim here is to provide context and rationale for why you want to transfer.

One of the significant aspects should be your reason for wanting to transfer. Were the academic offerings at your initial college not up to par? Did you have a personal situation that necessitated a change? Or perhaps, you've developed a new passion that your current institution can't adequately cater to?

Make sure to share what you've accomplished at your current college. This could include challenging coursework you've engaged with, relationships you've built with professors, or any significant growth you've made. This helps admissions officers understand what you would bring to their institution.

Additionally, be specific about why the school you're transferring to would be an ideal fit for you. Show that you've done your research. Mention specific faculty, programs, or resources that would support your academic and career goals.

Be genuine and personal—avoid cliches. You want the admissions committee to grasp a sense of who you are and what motivates you.

Now let's see an example of a strong transfer essay. Let's say Mary studies Engineering at her current college, but she's realized she wants to pursue Computer Science instead. She might start her essay like this:

"Halfway through my statics course, I found myself more enamored with the coding project I had taken on for fun than the engineering concepts being taught in class. I realized in that moment that my passion is not just in problem-solving, but a more specific field: Computer Science."

Mary could then explain her achievements in her coding hobby, how she's taken advantage of the available resources at her current school, and why she feels a different institution could better support her new passion. She would research and mention specific faculty, programs, or classes at the proposed institution that align with her goals.

Notice how specific, honest, and targeted this example is. It lays out Mary's legitimate reason for wanting to transfer, showcases her accomplishments, and shows her clear understanding of how the next institution can help her meet her goals. These are the elements you'll want to emulate in your essay.

Good luck with your application!
