Can military education transfer as college credits?

I have some military education and was wondering if it can count for college credits. Has anyone successfully transferred military credits to a college? If so, what was the process like?

Indeed, many military education and training experiences can be transferred as college credits. The American Council on Education (ACE) helps service members get academic credit for their military training and experiences. ACE conducts reviews of military courses and occupations and provides recommendations for what academic credits may be awarded.

To determine if your specific military training can be converted to academic credit, you should look up your military transcript. If you're a member of the Army, Navy, Marines, or Coast Guard, you can access your Joint Services Transcript online, which documents your military coursework and occupations, along with the ACE credit recommendations. Note that the Air Force issues transcripts through the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF).

To utilize these credits, you need to request a copy of your transcript and submit it to your prospective or current college. The institution's registrar or admissions office will review the transcript. They'll decide which credits, if any, can be applied towards your degree program based on the ACE recommendations and their own policies.

Keep in mind each college or university might handle these credits differently. Some may award elective credits, some may apply them towards specific course requirements, and others may not accept them at all. It's always best to check with the individual institution you plan to attend, or are attending, to understand their specific policies.

Good luck! It's great that you're looking into ways to utilize your military experience for educational advancement!
