Transferring from arts to science at Elgin Community College

I'm currently in an arts program at Elgin Community College but thinking about switching to science before transferring. Does anyone have experience with switching majors like this mid-program? How smooth is the process?

Switching majors mid-program can be quite a flexible process, especially at the community college level. You would need to first connect with your academic advisor to discuss your interest in changing your major and then evaluate the requirements and coursework needed to transition from an arts major to a science major.

Your advisor should be able to assist you in creating an academic plan that can ensure you're taking the necessary prerequisites for the new degree path, taking advantage of classes already taken, and keeping you on track for your transfer timeline if you plan on advancing to a 4-year university. I would also suggest reviewing the transfer agreement (if there's one) with the 4-year universities you aim to transition to after, to make sure the science courses you plan on taking will transfer. However, you should remember that your actual experience may vary based on various factors.

Consider also, the additional timeframe or semesters that this switch might add to your academic journey. Since arts and sciences have significantly different core requirements, you might need to take additional classes to fulfill the new major's requirements.

Remember to also think about why you're wanting to make the switch. Changing from arts to science is quite a leap and it's important to be sure that this decision aligns with your career goals and interests. A switch in majors can indeed be a smooth process as long as you have a well-structured plan and the right guidance.
