Transfer Credits from Community College to EWU

I'm currently attending a community college and thinking about transferring to Eastern Washington University. How does EWU evaluate transfer credits from community colleges? Are there any limits on the number of credits they accept?

Eastern Washington University (EWU) has a comprehensive process for evaluating transfer credits from community colleges. The primary guideline is that the courses you've taken at your community college must be similar in nature, level, and content to the courses offered at EWU. Equivalent courses will be transferred directly, potentially satisfying major requirements or General Education Core Requirements (GECRs).

As for credit limits, EWU typically accepts up to 90 lower-division (100-200 level) semester credits. After that point, additional credits may be accepted, but they will count as upper-division (300-400 level) credits. Therefore, the decision to award over 90 credits will depend on the nature of the completed courses and how they align with EWU's curriculum.

However, not all your credits may apply directly to your degree. While all the credits you earn might transfer, only the ones that fulfill the requirements for your intended major, minor, or general education will count toward your degree.

It's also important to remember that while many course credits transfer quite seamlessly, some program-specific courses might not. This is something you'll want to clarify with an academic advisor at both schools.

EWU also has a dedicated Transfer Guide available on its website which provides more details on courses accepted from various community colleges. This can be a stellar resource for understanding how your specific courses might be evaluated.

Remember that EWU, like all institutions, reserves the right to alter or change its transfer credit policies, so it’s prudent to verify this information before submitting your application.
