How does FAFSA work when transferring to another college?

I’m currently receiving financial aid and might transfer to another college soon. How does the FAFSA process work in this case, and do I need to reapply or update anything?

If you're considering transferring to another college, you will need to update your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to reflect the change in your school. The steps for updating your FAFSA are generally quite simple:

1. Go to the FAFSA website and log in to your account.

2. Click on "Make FAFSA Corrections".

3. Navigate to the "School Selection" section of your application.

4. Replace the current school listed with the code of the new college that you're transferring to. If you want to apply to multiple schools, you can list up to 10 schools at a time on your FAFSA application.

5. Review the rest of your FAFSA to make sure all other information is accurate and up-to-date. Keep in mind that your financial aid eligibility might change if your living situation or dependency status changes due to the transfer.

6. Sign and submit the FAFSA.

Remember, financial aid does not automatically transfer from one school to another, so you need to complete this process for the new school to consider you for financial aid. Your financial aid package may look different at the new school, because each school determines financial aid based on their costs of attendance, resources, and policies. You should reach out to the financial aid office of the school you're transferring to understand how much aid you could potentially receive and any additional requirements they have (for example, many private colleges require the submission of the CSS Profile, as well as the FAFSA).

Additionally, if you're transferring in the middle of the academic year, be aware that the timing could complicate your financial aid situation. It's crucial to communicate with the financial aid offices at both the existing and prospective schools to make sure there is no interruption in your aid.

Lastly, remember to check deadlines! You should make sure to complete these changes well before the new college's financial aid deadline to ensure you have the best chance of receiving the maximum amount of aid.
