Transferring to Pomona College: Is it tough?

I'm currently at another college but want to transfer to Pomona College. I'd like to know how challenging the process is and if you have any tips on making my application stand out.

Transferring to Pomona College can indeed be challenging as the school has a very low transfer acceptance rate. The number of available slots for transfer students varies each year depending on the size of the incoming class and the number of current students who have chosen to take a gap year or study abroad.

Although it's competitive, don’t be discouraged. Here are some pointers to help make your application as strong as possible:

Academics: Strong academic performance at your current institution is crucial. Admissions will closely look at your college GPA, the rigor of your courses, and your academic progression.

Course Selection: Since Pomona is a liberal arts college, they value a well-rounded education. Even if you have a specific major in mind, make sure you're taking courses across various disciplines.

Personal Statement: This is arguably the most significant part of your transfer application. It's your opportunity to explain why you want to transfer and why Pomona is the right fit for you. Be introspective and genuine in your explanations.

Specialty or "Spike": Like any other college, Pomona values candidates who can bring something extraordinary or unique to the table. Whether it's an academic achievement or service project, a passion or talent, be sure to include these aspects in your application.

Extracurriculars: Pomona values engagement in clubs, sports, the arts, or community service. Therefore, it can be beneficial to remain involved and gain leadership positions in extracurriculars at your current institution.

Lastly, it is strongly recommended that you visit the campus, if possible, or connect with the admissions office virtually to gain more insights and show your intention and interest.

Given the competitive nature of the process, it's also a good idea to have safety and match schools in your transfer list. Spend some time researching and identifying multiple colleges that you'd be happy attending.
