How to List College Transfer Experience on a Resume?

I transferred to another college during my undergrad years, and I'm updating my resume. What's the best way to include this transfer experience on my resume to show it's a positive part of my academic journey?

Including a college transfer experience on your resume can be handled in a very straightforward way. The key is to ensure that it does not cause confusion and to highlight any achievements or relevant coursework from each institution.

Here's one way you could structure it:

1. Education Section: In the education section of your resume, list both universities. Start with the university from which you received your degree. Below this, include the university from which you transferred. You can include the dates of attendance next to each institution to make it clear you began at one university and completed your degree at another.

Example:

University of XYZ (Graduation year)

Bachelor's Degree, Field of Study

ABC College (Attendance years)

2. Highlight Achievements and Relevant Coursework: If you completed significant coursework or achieved noteworthy accomplishments (such as honors, awards, or significant projects) at your first institution, you should find a way to highlight these in your resume. You can do this either in a separate section or under the listing of the relevant institution in your Education section.

Example:

ABC College (Attendance years)

Completed 60 credits in biomedical sciences

Member of Dean's List, Fall 2020 - Spring 2021

Remember that if you've graduated, the specific classes you took are less relevant than your degree. Because of this, including classes from your transfer college should be done sparingly and only if they're relevant to the job for which you're applying.

Of course, all of this is only applicable if your transfer experience pertains to the job to which you’re applying. If your transfer experience, coursework, or accomplishments aren't relevant to the position, they might not need to be included at all. Ultimately, your resume should be a detailed yet concise summary of your experiences and accomplishments that are most pertinent and impressive to a potential employer.
