Can You Transfer to Dartmouth College?

I'm in my second year at another college and considering transferring to Dartmouth. What should I focus on to strengthen my application? Also, any idea about Dartmouth’s transfer acceptance rate?

Transferring to Dartmouth College or any top-tier institution requires careful planning. You'd want to strengthen all components of your application to increase your chances.

Firstly, you need a strong academic record. Dartmouth looks for evidence of academic achievement and intellectual promise, so strong grades in rigorous courses at your current institution are critical.

Secondly, unlike many universities, Dartmouth seeks applicants whose interests extend beyond the classroom. Highlight your engagement in any extracurricular and community activities at your current institution. These could include participation in student organizations, leadership roles, community service, part-time work, etc.

Thirdly, communicate your reasons for wanting to transfer clearly and effectively in your application essays. Dartmouth is interested in knowing why you believe their college will be a better match for you than your current school, and why you want to transfer to Dartmouth specifically, rather than any other institution. Do your research about what specifically Dartmouth offers that aligns with your educational and career goals, and integrate these details into your essays.

Lastly, your letters of recommendation should be from people who know your work well, can speak to your abilities and potential, and endorse your transfer. Your recommenders should ideally be from the faculty at your current institution.

Do remember that transfer acceptance rates at schools like Dartmouth can be significantly lower than regular acceptance rates. For example, during the 2023-2024 admissions cycle, the acceptance rate for transfer students at Dartmouth was about 1.6%, compared to a rate of about 6.2% for first-year applicants. So, the process is undoubtedly competitive.

However, don't get disheartened by the numbers! Instead, focus on putting together the best application you can, as there are always students who do transfer successfully to Dartmouth. That said, having a back-up plan and/or applying to multiple institutions is also a good idea, to ensure you have an option for next year that you're excited about. Good luck!
