Tips for transferring into the art program at Hunter College?

I'm an art major looking to transfer to Hunter College. Does anyone have advice or experience with the transfer process specifically for their art program? How competitive is it, and what should I prepare?

That's wonderful that you're interested in the art program at Hunter College! It's important to keep in mind that competitive art programs often scrutinize portfolios and academic merit apart from general college requirements.

Being that Hunter College is part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system, the general process for transfer applicants includes submitting your application through the CUNY application portal. You'll want to include all college level coursework, and prepare your high school transcript if you've earned less than 24 credits.

For the art program, a portfolio is required. Concentrate on making your portfolio as strong as it can be - it's a critical component of your application. You should include around 15-20 pieces of your best, most recent work. Don't worry too much about variety. It's more important to show your artistic voice, and your ability to refine your ideas and techniques. Make sure to adhere to the portfolio guidelines provided by the school.

Some additional advice: There's a lot of emphasis on how well you engage with your subjects, concepts, and design principles. Write thoughtfully about your work in your artist statement - discuss your inspirations, the development of your ideas, and any formative experiences that shaped your work.

Also, don't disregard the importance of your GPA. Although art programs are largely portfolio based, maintaining good academic standing contributes to a strong profile - competitive admissions look at your overall commitment to academic success.

In terms of competition, Hunter College’s art program is known for its intensive focus and rigorous standards, so yes, it has been competitive in the past. But don't let this discourage you. Everyone's art is unique, and it's your individual voice and dedication that they are looking for.

With perseverance and careful preparation of your application materials, you enhance your chances of success. Good luck with your transfer process!
