What are the transfer requirements from Los Angeles City College?

I'm planning to attend Los Angeles City College before transferring to a 4-year university. Does anyone know what the transfer requirements are, and how competitive the process might be for transferring to schools in the UC or CSU systems?

The process of transferring from a community college like Los Angeles City College to a UC or CSU system institution is streamlined through the use of Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) programs. These programs outline a set of courses and GPA requirement that, if met, usually guarantee admission to certain UCs and all CSUs.

For UC schools, six of the nine campuses offer TAGs - UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. Each school has its own specific set of requirements, but generally, you'll need to complete at least 60 UC-transferable semester units with a certain GPA (usually around a 3.2 or higher). For CSU schools, the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) program guarantees admission to a CSU campus. You'll need to earn an associate degree in an approved field.

Keep in mind, obtaining a TAG or ADT does not necessarily guarantee admission to your desired program of study or the campus of your choice. While this process can increase the odds of being admitted, transfer admission to UCs and CSUs can still be competitive, especially to campuses and programs like UCLA or UC Berkeley, and STEM or Business majors.

You'll also need to pay attention to the deadlines for both the TAG program (typically in early fall) and regular transfer admission applications (usually due by the end of November). Make sure to also review the general education and major preparation requirements for each institution you're interested in. Your community college should have counselors available to assist you in this process. Good luck on your journey!
