How do transfer programs at Maricopa Community College function?

I'm starting to look into Maricopa Community Colleges and their transfer programs. I'd love to know how these programs work and if they're a straightforward pathway to universities.

Maricopa Community Colleges offer various transfer programs designed to assist and simplify the transition from a community college to a four-year university for students. These programs are usually highly structured, offering specific curriculum that aligns with the requirement of the partner universities.

Maricopa Community Colleges have partnerships with several Arizona universities, such as Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and University of Arizona. There are also partnerships with numerous out-of-state and online schools.

One common transfer program offered is the Maricopa to ASU Pathways Program (MAPP). This pathway guarantees admission into a degree program at ASU for students who complete an associate degree at a Maricopa Community College and meet certain eligibility requirements. Notably, admission into specific programs at ASU may have additional requirements.

Additionally, through the 2NAU program, students can take classes at a Maricopa Community College while receiving personalized advising from NAU advisors.

Transferring typically requires students to maintain a specific GPA, typically around a 2.0 – 2.5 or higher, and complete the necessary coursework in their associate degree program. Often, transfer agreements will guarantee admission, provided the student meets certain requirements.

While transfer programs tend to streamline the process, it's not completely hassle-free. The student still needs to initiate the process, monitor their academic progress, and work closely with both Maricopa advisors and advisors at the university they plan to attend.

Furthermore, not every credit may transfer directly or may not count towards specific major requirements. This is where working with advisors becomes crucial so that students can plan their course schedule to avoid taking classes that will not ultimately count towards their bachelor's degree.

For further information and creating a suitable plan, I recommend contacting the advising centers at your chosen community college as well as your intended four-year institution. They will help make the transition as smooth as possible. If you already have a intended major, it would be helpful to also get in touch with that department's advising at the university level.
