Understanding transfer credit equivalency at Hunter College

I'm planning to transfer to Hunter College and want to understand how they evaluate transfer credits. Has anyone had experience with this? Were there any unexpected challenges with credit equivalency?

Hunter College has a clearly outlined process for the evaluation of transfer credits. They have Transfer Evaluation Services (TES) that assesses your transcripts from previously attended post-secondary institutions and determines how credits earned at those institutions may be applied to your Hunter degree program.

It's important to know that equivalent courses are evaluated on a course-by-course basis and must be similar in nature, content, and level to courses offered at Hunter College. For example, if you took a course in Calculus 1, and it aligns closely with Hunter's Calculus 1 course, you're likely to receive credit.

However, be aware that not all credits may transfer the way you expect. For instance, some credits might transfer as elective course credit instead of course-specific credit. If you're not sure whether a certain course would transfer or count toward your Hunter degree program, it can be useful to reach out to Transfer Evaluation Services or the specific department at Hunter.

In terms of challenges, transfer students often express difficulty predicting exactly how their credits will transfer, especially if they’re transferring from an institution with a different course numbering system or quarter system, as opposed to a semester system which is what Hunter uses.

A good strategy could be to review your course syllabi and compare them with those of equivalent courses at Hunter. That can help you make an estimation of which credits might transfer directly into your major and which might become elective credit.

But always remember that the definitive word would come from the TES officials after they've had a chance to review your official transcripts, so it is important to send your official transcripts as soon as you can after you've applied.
