What should I know about transferring from Hunter College to NYU?

I'm at Hunter College right now but thinking of transferring to NYU next year. Has anyone gone through this process? I'd love to know about the challenges and benefits, and whether it was worth it.

Transferring colleges can be a complex process, so planning and understanding the requirements is critical. It's fantastic that you're interested in considering all sides of the decision, including potential challenges and benefits.

Firstly, understand that NYU is more selective, and they'll look at your academic achievements at Hunter, your high school record, and any other experiences you highlight in your application. Given that the average GPA of accepted transfer students at NYU tends to be above 3.5, keeping your grades up will be extremely important.

The transfer application will include components like your transcript, an application essay, and possibly letters of recommendation. Your application essay is your chance to explain why you want to transfer, and how NYU can help you reach your goals. You'll want to convey a clear reason for your desired transfer, so spend time reflecting on why NYU is a better fit for you than Hunter.

Another important aspect to consider is financial aid. NYU is notably more expensive than Hunter. You'll need to fill out a FAFSA for the year you'll be transferring, as NYU uses it to determine your financial aid package. Despite its reputation for being stingy with aid, NYU has made strides recently in improving financial aid packages, especially for those with demonstrated need. Use the net price calculator on NYU's website to estimate your possible financial contribution.

After admission, you'll need to consider credit transfer. Every college has different policies about which credits transfer and how they apply towards your new degree. While NYU generally accepts credits from accredited colleges like Hunter, not every credit will necessarily apply toward your specific degree requirements at NYU. It's important to speak with an academic advisor or admissions counselor at NYU to understand how your credits may transfer.

As for benefits, NYU offers a wide diversity of courses, study abroad programs, and internships, especially appropriate if you're interested in fields like business, performing arts, or international studies. It is also known for its strong emphasis on research, vibrant campus life, and location in Manhattan.

In terms of challenges, setting aside the application and financial aspects, and adjusting to a new social environment can be tough. NYU has a very different vibe from Hunter. It's a larger school, more campus-oriented, and the student body is more diverse in terms of international and out-of-state students.

The "worth it" bit is highly subjective and dependent on your personal, academic, and career goals. If NYU has a strong program in your desired field of study and aligns better with your long-term objectives, then the process, despite its challenges, could very well be worth it.

If you decide to proceed with the transfer, make sure to keep track of all deadlines and gather your application materials early. Good luck!
