Can poor high school grades affect my college transfer?

I didn't do so well in high school, but I'm hoping to transfer to a better college. How much will those grades still impact my application? Do colleges focus more on my community college performance?

Certainly, colleges will pay attention to your high school record when you apply as a transfer. However, your performance in community college is often more impactful. As a transfer student, your college-level coursework gets more weight during the admissions process.

Every institution is unique in how they evaluate transfer applications. Most universities prioritize your more recent academic performance. Therefore, exhibiting strong academic performance in your current community college coursework could positively influence your application.

Transferring after a year or two of solid academic performance at a community college gives admissions officers fresh, relevant evidence of your scholarly abilities. Do well there, continue developing relationships with professors to secure strong recommendation letters, and your high school grades will play much less of a role in your application.

As part of your transfer application, it can also be valuable to explain why your high school grades aren't representative of your potential. Your personal statement or additional information session can elaborate on how you've grown and improved as a student during your time at community college.

Involve yourself in on-campus activities, programs, or leadership positions can also compensate for those grades. College is as much about character and growth as it is about academics.

Keep going, and best of luck with your transfer!
