Engineering Transfers to MSU: Credit Concerns

I'm looking to transfer to Michigan State's engineering program from a community college. I heard credits can be tricky. Has anyone been through this and can share how it went for them?

Transferring credits between colleges, especially in a technical program like engineering, can indeed be complex. Rules vary from one institution to another, and even within institutions different departments might have different requirements. However, Michigan State has a tool called the transfer credit equivalency system that allows you to check which credits are likely to be recognized. Simply input the community college's courses and see which MSU equivalents come up.

Keep in mind that even if your credits are recognized, some may not count towards your major. For example, the engineering program at MSU requires specific foundational courses and not all physics or math classes from different colleges are deemed equivalent. It's a good idea to reach out to an academic advisor at MSU ahead of time. They can provide a preliminary evaluation of your transcript and give you a better idea of which of your current courses will apply towards your intended major.

Although I can't share a personal experience, many students who transfer into MSU's engineering program have expressed satisfaction after their transition, but they have also noted the importance of early strategic planning to ensure required credits are duly recognized. They didn't leave anything to chance but insisted on confirmation and approval from their academic advisors. This approach ensured a smooth transition without any unexpected surprises. It can be a bit of a bureaucracy navigation, but well worth it in the end to make the most out of your transferred credits.
