I'm planning to transfer and major in psychology at Pomona College. Does anyone know if the program is particularly competitive for transfers, and what are the course requirements like?
Pomona's psychology major is a popular and well-regarded program. However, Pomona College does not report data on the competitiveness of its programs specifically for transfer students, so it's hard to say exactly how competitive it is to transfer into this program. What we do know is that transferring to Pomona is competitive overall.
As for the course requirements, a psychology major at Pomona requires 10 courses, following a particular structure:
1. Psychology 51 – Statistics and Data Analysis is a prerequisite for PSYC-189, a lab course.
2. Psychology 52 – Research Methods is expected to be completed before PSYC-189.
3. PSYC-189, a lab course, which is usually taken in the Junior year.
4. Five additional psychology courses, with at least one from each of the three clusters:
- Cluster I: Cognitive Processes and Neuroscience (PSYC 135, 136, 140, 142)
- Cluster II: Social, Personality, and Abnormal (PSYC 150, 152, 156, 157)
- Cluster III: Developmental, Educational, and Organizational (PSYC 160, 162, 164, 165)
5. Two electives, which can include any Psychology courses or, with department approval, relevant courses in other departments.
6. A senior exercise, typically a thesis, during your Senior year.
This is a very rigorous curriculum that allows for a comprehensive study of psychology from various dimensions. If you're considering transferring, it would be especially beneficial if you have already taken coursework equivalent to Psych 51 and 52, so you'll be well-prepared for the remaining courses.
Hope this helps to clarify! Just let us know if you need any more information. Good luck with your prospective transfer application!
