CSU transfer requirements from Sacramento City College?

I’m currently at Sacramento City College and considering transferring to a CSU. What are the transfer requirements I need to know about? Do I need to complete certain classes or meet a specific GPA?

Transferring from a California Community College, such as Sacramento City College, to a California State University (CSU) campus involves fulfilling certain prerequisites.

First, CSUs generally have a minimum cumulative GPA requirement for transfer students. The specific GPA can vary from campus to campus, but in general, for California residents, the minimum GPA is 2.0. However, some programs might have higher GPA requirements.

In terms of coursework, the California Community College system has the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) program which ensures that if you complete the associate’s degree in a verified program, you'll be guaranteed admission with junior standing somewhere in the CSU system. This doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be accepted into your chosen major or campus, but it does guarantee you'll be accepted into a CSU campus that offers a program that is similar to the one you studied at your community college.

Additionally, to be considered upper-division transfer eligible (which means you'd enter the CSU as a junior), you must meet the following requirements:

- Complete 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of transferable coursework

- Complete at least 30 units of General Education, with passing grades, including all four basic skills courses: oral communication (A1), written communication (A2), critical thinking (A3), and mathematics/quantitative reasoning (B4)

A valuable resource to help you plan your transfer is ASSIST.org, an online student-transfer information system that shows how course credits earned at one public California college or university can be applied when transferred to another. Keep in mind that transfer requirements can be specific not only to the campus, but also to the specific program you're applying to, so specific course requirements will vary.

Finally, there are application deadlines to note: CSUs typically open their application period in the Fall, often October through December for admission the following year, but you should check the specific CSU’s website for their exact deadlines.

Remember that every situation is unique. Meet with your academic counselor to determine the best course of action for you. Make sure to consider your academic, personal, and career goals as you decide on the best path forward.
