How do transfer credits work at Sacramento City College?

I'm considering starting at Sacramento City College and then transferring. Can someone explain how the transfer credits work there? I'm curious about whether they easily transfer to universities like CSU or UC. Any tips would be great!

Sacramento City College (SCC) has great transfer programs and collaborations with a variety of higher education institutions, including the University of California (UC) system and California State University (CSU) system. Your credits from SCC should transfer pretty smoothly to these systems given certain conditions.

Firstly, it's critical to plan your courses appropriately. SCC offers what's known as Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs) which are specifically designed to streamline the transfer process to CSU system. These degrees come with a guarantee of junior standing and priority admission consideration at the CSU system. For some specific majors, you can even be guaranteed admission.

As for transferring to UC campuses, SCC also has a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program with six UC campuses. This program requires you to complete certain courses with a particular GPA, among other requirements - but once those are met, you're guaranteed a spot. A counselor at SCC can help you determine eligibility for the TAG program.

The key thing to note here is that not all credits may seamlessly transfer over. The courses must be UC or CSU transferable, or a part of the IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum), which is accepted by CSU and many UC campuses. Each university also has its own required courses which you will need to complete in order to be eligible for your desired major. Make sure you work closely with a counselor or advisor to understand these requirements - every college and major might have slightly different prerequisites.

Remember to use resources like Assist.org, which is an online student-transfer information system that shows how course credits earned at one public California college or university can be applied when transferred to another. It's a great help in seeing if, and how, your credits will transfer.

Finally, remember that transferring is not just about credits, but also about preparing academically for your desired major. It's important to use your time at SCC to gain a solid foundation in the areas that will be critical for your continued studies. This will help ensure a seamless educational transition, in addition to the administrative aspects of credit transfer.

Hope this helps in your journey! Good luck!
