Can anyone share their experience transferring from Saddleback College to a UC?

I'm considering starting at Saddleback College and transferring to a UC. If anyone has done this, could you share your experience with the process? Was it complicated, and were there specific requirements you had to meet?

While I haven't personally gone through the process, I've learned about it through various students who have. Transferring from a community college like Saddleback to a UC school is a common and often rewarding path. In general, UCs have a strong commitment to accept transfers from California community colleges and have a clear roadmap for those students -- this is manifestly stated in UC's transfer policies.

Many students leverage a program called "Transfer Admission Guarantee" (TAG), available at six UC campuses - UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. This allows students to secure guaranteed admission from a UC if they meet certain course and GPA requirements. TAG requirements do vary depending on the UC, the major you're aiming for, and sometimes depend on the community college you're transferring from.

Now, it's important to note that the premier UC campuses - UCLA, UC San Diego, and UC Berkeley – do not participate in TAG. However, that absolutely does not preclude Saddleback students from aiming for these schools as while they might have higher admissions standards, many community college students each year successfully transfer to these institutions.

Additionally, students typically need to complete at least 60 UC-transferable semester units (or 90 quarter units), maintain a certain GPA, complete specific courses in their intended major, and fulfill general education requirements. Many students use a system called IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) to navigate these requirements.

Lastly, it's helpful to build a relationship with academic advisors both at Saddleback and the prospective UC to keep you on track. They can also help you navigate challenges that may arise during the transfer process.
