How does Saint Mary's College handle transfer credits?

I'm planning to transfer to Saint Mary's College and have a lot of credits from my current college. Can anyone tell me how transfer credits are evaluated and if there are any limits I should be aware of?

Saint Mary’s College has a specific process set out for transfer students. When you're accepted as a transfer student, the Registrar's Office will evaluate the credits you've earned at your current college to determine which ones can be applied at Saint Mary's.

Firstly, a course must be similar in content and level to a course offered at Saint Mary's to be considered for transfer credit. This means that general education or major specific courses stand a better chance of being accepted, while highly specialized or vocational courses may not translate.

Secondly, the courses must be taken at an accredited institution, and you must have earned a grade of 'C-' or better for the credits to transfer. Also, it's important to note that the grades from your previous institution will not factor into your GPA at Saint Mary's.

As for your question about limits, Saint Mary's will generally accept up to 64 semester credits from a two-year college and up to 84 semester credits from a four-year college or university. These rules ensure that transfer students complete a substantial portion of their coursework, including requirements for their major, at Saint Mary's College itself.

Do remember to get an official transcript from your current college sent over to the Registrar's Office for the evaluation process. Once they've evaluated your credits, they'll inform you of what's been accepted. Transferring can feel overwhelming, but Saint Mary's has a team of advisors ready to work with you every step of the way. Good luck with your transfer application and feel free to ask if you have more questions.
