How do I transfer from San Diego City College to UCSD?

I'm thinking about transferring from San Diego City College to UCSD and would love to hear from people who have done it. Are there specific steps or requirements I should be aware of? Do you have any tips for making my application stand out?

As a transfer student, you must take several steps to ensure a smooth transition from San Diego City College to UC San Diego (UCSD).

1. Ensure Eligibility: To be eligible for UC transfer, you must have a 2.4 GPA as an out-of-state student (2.8 for international students) and complete 60 semester or 90 quarter units of transferable college credit with a grade of C or better. Remember, UCSD, like all UC schools, requires that you finish most of these units or courses before the spring term of the year you transfer.

2. Complete General Education Requirements: UCSD recommends that you complete the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) at your community college before transferring. The IGETC includes courses in English, math, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and physical and biological sciences.

3. Major Preparation: Some majors at UCSD are capped, which means they have additional admission requirements and a selective application process. You will want to complete as many prerequisite courses as possible for your intended major. UCSD provides a list of recommended coursework by major on their website.

4. Apply: You'll apply to UCSD through the UC application, available on the UC’s official website, during the application filing period from August 1- December 2 for admission for the following fall semester.

5. Personal Insight Questions: As part of your UC application, you'll be asked to write four out of eight. These essays are an excellent opportunity to showcase your interests, experiences, and challenges you have overcome.

6. Transcripts: You'll need to provide final transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you’ve attended, whether or not the courses are transferable or the classes were completed.

7. TAG: Consider the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) if you meet specific requirements. Six UC campuses offer TAG, which guarantees admission if you fulfill certain eligibility conditions. Unfortunately, UCSD does not participate in the TAG program.

8. Transfer Admission Planner (TAP): The UC TAP tool can help you plan your courses, and track your progress towards meeting UC's minimum requirements, namely TAG, if applicable.

To stand out, aim for a GPA above the minimum requirement, complete as many major prep and general education courses as possible, and craft compelling Personal Insight Question responses. Show how your experiences have prepared you for your intended major at UCSD and connect your education to your long-term goals.

Lastly, take advantage of resources at your community college, particularly the advising or transfer center. They can provide specific guidance for your situation and help you craft the strongest application possible.
