Computer science transfer from San Diego Community College?

I'm studying computer science at a San Diego community college and want to transfer to a four-year program. Which universities nearby have strong computer science programs, and what's the transfer process like?

There are several universities in and around San Diego that offer strong computer science programs. One worth considering is the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). UCSD's computer science program is highly ranked and has strong faculty and curriculum.

Another feasible option is the University of California, Irvine (UCI), which is approximately an hour away from San Diego. Both these UC schools offer excellent computer science programs with state-of-the-art facilities and top-notch faculties.

For transferring from a community college to a UC, it's encouraged to follow the IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum), which helps California community college students satisfy lower-division general education requirements for any UC or CSU campus.

In addition, for UC specifically, there's something called the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program that ensures admission to one of six UC campuses (excluding UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD) if you meet certain criteria. One eligibility requirement is to complete 60 semester or 90 quarter units of transferable coursework by the time you start at the UC. Do note that each UC campus and each major has different pre-requisite courses, so you'll need to confirm what coursework is needed for computer science at your target Universities.

After completing all necessary coursework, the application process would involve submitting an application during the application filing period, which typically runs from October 1 to November 30.

Good luck with your transfer process! Keep up open communication with your current school's transfer counselor to stay informed on deadlines and any other specific transfer requirements. Be sure to maintain strong grades as competitive programs like computer science often require higher GPAs.
