Transfer Credits to SDSU: What's the Deal?

I'm looking into transferring to SDSU and wondering how transfer credits from other colleges work, especially for business majors. Does SDSU accept most community college credits easily, or should I expect some challenges?

Transfer students make up a considerable portion of the student body at San Diego State University (SDSU), so they have a streamlined system to accommodate incoming transfer credits. Generally, SDSU is quite generous about accepting community college credits.

The key aspect is that the courses you've taken at your previous institution should match the ones that SDSU offers. Most general education courses as well as some more specific courses related to your major (in this case, Business) will likely be transferable, assuming they are not remedial or vocational courses.

One helpful tool SDSU provides for California community college students is the Assist website, which offers articulated course agreements. This means you can see which of your community college courses are recognized as equivalent to courses at SDSU.

Furthermore, SDSU has an articulation agreement with all California Community Colleges, which stipulates that all courses that are transferable to the CSU (California State University) system will also be accepted by SDSU. The CSU system uses the IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum), which outlines the general education courses that community college students can complete to satisfy lower-division general education requirements before transferring to a CSU school.

If your courses are not listed on the Assist website or you are transferring from an out-of-state school, it does not necessarily mean that SDSU will not accept your credits. It just means a direct equivalency may not have been established. You may still be awarded general university elective credits.

Again, this process may slightly vary based on your major, so I would suggest getting in touch with an advisor at SDSU's Fowler College of Business directly to verify the transferability of your credits specific to the business degree. In any case, ensure that you request and submit your official transcripts from your previous institution(s) as part of your application to maximize the number of credits you can get transferred.

Remember that while transfer credits can count towards your total credit requirement for graduation, they may not necessarily meet specific course requirements or prerequisites within your major. It's always a good idea to double-check these requirements against your transfer credits.
