Transferring credits from SFA and community college classes

I'm looking at transferring credits from SFA and some community colleges I've attended. Does anyone have experience with how these credits are evaluated or what the transfer process is like?

Firstly, congratulations on your decision to transfer - it can be a big step and yet also so fruitful in molding one's educational path. Basically, the procedure for transferring credits generally follows this form:

1. Request Transcripts: You'll need to request official transcripts from the institutions where you've earned credits. These can usually be requested through the school's registrar office or through any online student portal.

2. Submit Transcripts: Next, you're going to send these official transcripts to your new institution's registrar or admissions office. They'll determine which credits will be accepted.

3. Evaluation: After your transcripts are submitted, the school will evaluate each course individually, often in collaboration with the corresponding academic department. They'll determine if the class material is similar enough to a class at their institution which can be accepted as credit.

4. Credit Outcomes: There are a few types of credit outcomes: direct equivalency (the class directly matches up with a class at the new school), elective credit (the class doesn't match up with a specific class but fulfills an elective requirement), or no credit.

Some of your community college classes, especially general education ones, may have transfer agreements in place with the SFA which will be especially helpful. It's important to note that universities often have a cap on how many credits they'll accept from 2-year schools.

Also, remember that a grade of a 'C' or better is typically required for credits to transfer. The grades you received in these classes often don't move with you, meaning your GPA will start fresh at SFA.

That said, transferring credits is a unique process for everyone. I highly recommend speaking with an academic counselor at SFA during this process. They can provide specific details pertaining to your unique situation and inform you of any nuances that could affect your transferability. Good luck!
