Community college to CSU for animation, possible?

I'm at a community college and interested in studying animation at CSU. What should I do to make my application strong? Any specific courses I should take now to prepare?

You can transfer from a community college to a CSU (California State University) to study animation. Here's what you can do to bolster your application:

1. Stay academically strong: Often, CSUs will look at a student's GPA in the overall admission process, so make sure you're earning good grades in your classes. Try to maintain as high a GPA as possible.

2. Animation-related coursework: Take as many courses as possible that relate to animation. This includes courses in art, design, computer graphics, and digital media. Sometimes, your community college might not offer specific animation courses, but no worries – schools like drawing, painting, and other art classes too. Use the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) and/or the CSU General Education Breadth requirements to make sure you're covering the right grounds.

3. Build a portfolio: Many animation programs at CSUs will require a portfolio as part of the application process. Use the projects and assignments from your animation-related courses to start building a strong portfolio. This should showcase your best work and demonstrate your passion for the field.

4. Extra-Curricular Activities: Engage in animation-themed clubs or events in your community college or local community. Not only will you acquire valuable experience, but it shows your commitment to this field outside the classroom.

5. Prepare to declare a major: At CSU, every student must declare a major while applying. If you're interested in animation, your application should be specific to the animation program at the CSU you're aiming for.

Remember, every CSU can have slightly different requirements for its animation program. Make sure you research the admission requirements of your desired CSU and work with your community college's transfer center or a counselor to plan your path forward. Good luck!
