Smith College and Community College Transfer Agreement

Is there a specific transfer agreement between Smith College and community colleges? I'm currently at a community college and want to know if Smith makes it easier for us to transfer. Any experiences or advice would be great!

While Smith College highly welcomes transfer students, including those from community colleges, they do not have formal articulation and transfer agreements with specific community colleges. However, Smith does make the process fairly accessible for transfers. They have specific transfer admission counselors who are dedicated to helping candidates through the admission process.

For a smooth transfer, it's important to ensure that the majority of your community college coursework will be accepted by Smith. Smith generally accepts credits in the liberal arts and sciences from regionally accredited colleges, but has limits on professional, vocational and technical credits.

Specifically, Smith looks for candidates who have done well in rigorous academic courses, and they recommend taking a curriculum that includes courses in English, mathematics, foreign language, natural sciences, and social sciences. A specific prerequisite isn't needed, but a strong course in English composition is highly recommended.

Transfer applications are considered for both fall and spring semesters. Regardless of your current college GPA, just remember to put your best foot forward during the application process – this could mean writing a compelling personal essay or obtaining strong recommendations.

Remember that the school also offers an Ada Comstock Scholars program specifically for non-traditional aged students (typically, women 24 years and older), which may be appealing to those transferring from community college later in life. Also, financial aid is available for transfer students, and the application for need-based aid is separate from the admissions application.

For more comprehensive and personalized advice about transferring, it may be helpful to reach out directly to the Smith College Admissions Office. They can provide application tips and further explain the transfer credit policy.
