How does Smith College handle transfer credits?

I'm thinking about transferring to Smith College and I'm curious how they evaluate transfer credits. Is there anything I need to do beforehand, like submitting a credit form or petition?

Smith College has a pretty thorough approach to evaluating transfer credits. They consider courses taken at other accredited institutions for which you've received a grade of C- or better. However, you should take note that additional factors, such as whether the course aligns well with Smith's curriculum and academic rigor, also come into play when determining if credits will transfer.

While Smith performs this evaluation, it’s often a good idea to explore which of your classes might align well with Smith's course catalog beforehand. This can give you an idea of what could transfer over. Of course, the official decision will still come from the college itself.

Another thing to think about is the number of credits you're transferring with. At Smith, a transferee can't bring in more than 64 credits, which translates to about two years of study. If you have taken more courses, Smith will select which are accepted, prioritizing those that fulfill your degree requirements.

Lastly, keep in mind that your GPA doesn't transfer with you. Once you start at Smith College, you will be starting with a fresh cumulative GPA reflective of your studies there.

Remember to request your official transcripts from your current institution(s) to be sent over to Smith College's registrar's office. This will facilitate the evaluation process. No particular form or petition is required for transferring credits, so once Smith receives your transcripts, they will handle the evaluation process. It's always a good rule of thumb to check in with the registrar’s department directly if you have specific questions or concerns.
