Understanding transfer equivalency at Spelman College

How does Spelman College handle transfer equivalency for courses? I have quite a few credits from my current college and want to know how they'll be evaluated at Spelman.

At Spelman College, the process of evaluating transfer credit involves examining the syllabi and course material from your current/recent institution(s). The goal is to compare and match your completed courses with those offered at Spelman, ensuring the material covered is of equivalent rigor and depth.

Keep in mind that much of this process depends on the specific courses you've taken. For example, a general chemistry class at most accredited institutions would likely transfer as its equivalent at Spelman, as there is a common scientific understanding of what’s covered in a general chemistry class. Likewise, standard calculus or English composition classes typically transfer well.

On the other hand, more unique or specialized courses, such as those in humanities or social sciences, might not have a direct equivalent at Spelman. For these types of courses, you may need to provide additional documentation (like syllabi or coursework) to support your transfer credit request.

It's also important to mention that Spelman only accepts transfer credit from regionally accredited institutions, and grades must be C or better in order for transfer credit to be awarded. However, the grades from your transferred credits do not factor into your Spelman GPA. You'll start with a clean slate in that regard.

Another key point is the residency requirement. Regardless of the number of credits you're able to transfer, you must complete at least 60 semester hours at Spelman to be eligible to graduate from the college.

It’s always a great idea to speak directly with Spelman's registrar or admissions office so they can evaluate your specific scenario. They’ll be most equipped to guide you on what might transfer based on the classes you've completed.
