Stern College Transfer Student Experience

I'm interested in transferring to Stern College and would love to hear from current transfer students. What was your experience like during the process? Were there specific challenges or surprises I should prepare for?

I'm sure you'll hear from a variety of people about this, but here's some information I've gathered from students who have successfully transferred to Stern.

First, the application process for transferring can be quite intensive, similar to that of applying as a first-year student. Stern requires certain prerequisites to be completed, including coursework in calculus and microeconomics. If you haven't fulfilled these requirements at your current institution, you may need to complete them before being considered a viable candidate for transfer.

Credit transfer can also be an issue, as it's not always guaranteed that all of your previously earned credits will be accepted. It's advised to reach out to Stern's admissions office, or the office of the specific department you're interested in, to verify which of your credits would transfer.

As a part of the application process, the personal statement plays a key role. Crafting a compelling story about why you're interested in transferring to Stern, highlighting your past academic and extracurricular experiences, and elucidating why Stern's specific programs align with your future goals can significantly enhance your candidacy.

Once accepted, transfer students have mentioned feeling slightly out of place initially, due to the already established social circles. However, joining clubs and engaging in community events can quickly immerse you into Stern's culture.

Also, keep in mind that Stern's curriculum is rigorous, some students have noted they had to adjust their study habits to stay on top of the coursework.

In terms of housing, securing a place in university housing can be challenging as spots tend to fill up fast. Some students have opted for off-campus housing instead.

Overall, the students I've heard from say the transfer to Stern was a worthwhile decision, finding the academic challenge invigorating and appreciating the vast opportunities at Stern and within NYU at large. But having a clear understanding of what to expect and early preparation can alleviate some of the potential surprises along the way. Best of luck!
