I'm currently attending a community college and looking to transfer to a UC school next year. Can anyone share what the key steps are in the transfer process and any important deadlines I should be aware of?
Absolutely, happy to clarify the transfer process from a California community college to a UC school!
1. Determine which UCs you're interested in. Each UC has certain college requirements and some majors at some schools are capped or competitive. Do your research to determine which UCs are the best fit for your intended major and career goals.
2. Plan and meet course requirements. You should aim to meet the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) requirements which cover your basic GE requirements. Preferably, complete requisite courses for your intended major as well.
3. GPA is critical. Each UC has a different GPA requirement for transfers, so ensure your GPA meets the minimum for your desired UCs. Some competitive majors may require a higher GPA.
4. Complete your year at the community college. Most UCs require you to complete 60 semester (90 quarter) units before you transfer.
5. Apply! The UC application filing period is from October 1 to November 30. You'll need to write a personal insight essay, provide your academic history, and enter your planned coursework.
6. Submit your academic records. You don’t need to submit your transcripts unless a campus requests them.
After your application:
- If you applied to UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, or another UC that requires a supplemental application for your major, you'll need to fill that out.
- Complete all coursework as reported in your application.
- Send final transcripts if admitted and accept your offer!
Monitor your email and application portal diligently for any communications from the UCs to which you applied. Good luck!
