Transferring community college classes to College of Charleston

Is there anyone who's transferred from a community college to the College of Charleston? I’m curious about how the course credits transfer and any tips for ensuring all my classes are accepted.

One of the most important steps in transferring from a community college or any other institution to the College of Charleston (or any college/university for that matter), is understanding and researching that college's credit transfer policies. The College of Charleston's Transfer Resource Center offers numerous resources to help transfer students understand how their courses will equate, including a Transfer Equivalency Tool on their website. This tool allows you to select your current institution and view a list of courses that have transferred in the past.

Remember that the Transfer Equivalency Tool is just a guide and is subject to change. Course equivalencies can vary from year to year based on curriculum changes at either institution and not all classes that have transferred in the past are guaranteed to transfer in the future. So after doing your preliminary research with the tool, I suggest speaking directly with a transfer advisor at Charleston. They can give you the most current and accurate information.

In terms of tips to ensure your classes are accepted, the best advice is to take courses at your community college that are equivalent to or serve as prerequisites for, courses in your target major at Charleston. Also maintaining good academic standing could be important, as certain competitive or regulated majors may have minimum grade requirements for prerequisite courses.

Moreover, remember to submit all your official transcripts, not just from your current community college but also from any other colleges or universities you've attended. Omitting transcripts can create unnecessary complications in the credit evaluation process.

Finally, be patient but proactive. The transfer credit evaluation process can take some time, but if you haven’t heard anything within a few weeks of submitting your transcripts, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Transfer Resource Center for an update.

This is a general guide that should apply to most colleges, but specifics can vary, so your best resource will ultimately be the Transfer Resource Center at the College of Charleston.
