Is it okay if I don't check all boxes in the Common App activities section?

Hello, I'm currently completing my Common App and I'm not 100% sure that I need to check every single box in the activities section. I have a few areas that don't apply to me and I don't want to force anything unnecessary. Does this look bad to colleges or is it totally fine? Thanks for your input!

It's definitely okay if you don't check all the boxes in the Common App activities section. Colleges understand that every student is unique and has their own set of interests and involvements. It's important for your application to be an accurate representation of who you are rather than trying to force yourself into activities that don't suit you just to fill up all the available spaces.

In fact, quality is more important than quantity when it comes to extracurriculars. Admissions officers value the depth of your involvement, your commitment, and your leadership within a few key activities more than a long list of superficial or unrelated engagements. Most successful applicants to top colleges have 8-10 extracurriculars, but they are typically highly-involved in a few of those. So, by focusing on the activities that truly matter to you and showcasing your skills and dedication, you can make a lasting impression on your target colleges.

Keep in mind, though, that it's still important to include a diverse range of activities that highlight your skills, interests, and achievements. For example, if you're passionate about community service, it's great to have a few different projects or organizations where you've been active and made a significant impact.

Good luck with your application!
