MIT applicant interviews—how common are they?

So I recently submitted my MIT application, and I've been wondering about the interview portion of the process. What percentage of applicants typically get interviews? Does not getting one hurt my chances?

Interviews for MIT applicants are offered based on alumni interviewer availability in your region. The Institute attempts to offer interviews to as many applicants as possible, but they acknowledge that they may not be able to connect every single applicant with an alumnus due to geographic constraints. According to MIT, more than 70% of applicants receive an interview.

While MIT does value the interview, if you are unable to have one, it does not hurt your application. The admissions office understands that you don't have control over the availability of interviewers, and they won't penalize you for not being able to participate.

However, if you are offered an interview and discard the opportunity, it could potentially raise concerns in the admissions office about your interest and commitment. So if you are given the chance to have one, I would recommend taking it. It's an excellent opportunity for the admissions team to get to know you better and assess your fit for the MIT community.
