Is Cornell really in the middle of nowhere?

I've been looking at applying to Cornell, but I've heard people say it's in the middle of nowhere. How true is this? Would I feel too isolated if I went there? Any current students or people familiar with the area, your input would be great!

As someone who was concerned about the same thing and now goes to Cornell, I can assure you, Cornell is not "in the middle of nowhere"! Cornell University is located in Ithaca, New York, which is considered a small city rather than being in the middle of nowhere. Ithaca is known for its natural beauty, with gorges, waterfalls, and scenic hiking trails. The downtown area is vibrant, offering an array of local shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. In terms of population, Ithaca has around 30,000 residents—not a huge metropolis, but not a tiny rural town either.

As a student at Cornell, you'll have access to the amenities and activities available on campus, as well as those within the Ithaca community. It's important to mention that the feeling of isolation varies from person to person. If you're used to living in a big city, Ithaca may feel quieter and less bustling in comparison. On the other hand, if you enjoy nature, outdoor activities, and a smaller-town vibe, the area is likely to be a good fit for you.

Many students find that there's plenty to do on campus, with a wide range of clubs, organizations, and campus events to participate in. You might also consider visiting Ithaca and Cornell before deciding to see if the location suits your preferences.
