AP Latin Difficulty Level?

I'm considering taking AP Latin next year, but I'm not sure if I'm prepared for the difficulty. How hard is the class and the exam? Also, how does it compare to first-year Latin? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hello! AP Latin can definitely be a challenging course, but it often depends on your prior Latin experience and your affinity for languages. From what I understand, you've taken first-year Latin, which provides a good foundation.

However, AP Latin focuses more on reading and analyzing classical Latin literature and requires a deeper understanding of Latin grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, as well as knowledge of Roman history and culture.

In the class, you'll primarily read works by two famous authors, Vergil's Aeneid and Caesar's Gallic Wars. This means that the coursework will be heavily text-based, involving translation and interpretation of these texts. It's important to remember that the class will move at a faster pace than first-year Latin, and you'll be expected to apply previous knowledge while learning new concepts.

As for the exam, it consists of multiple-choice and free-response sections. The multiple-choice section tests your comprehension of the literature, grammar/syntax, and historical context. The free-response section assesses your ability to analyze passages and translate texts from the required readings. It's common for students to find the exam challenging, but proper preparation during the course will help tremendously.

Ultimately, your experience in AP Latin will depend on your dedication to studying and keeping up with the coursework. If you have a passion for Latin and are willing to put in the effort, it can be a rewarding experience. To determine if you're ready for the class, I suggest talking to your current Latin teacher or any teachers who teach AP Latin at your school. They can provide specific advice tailored to your skill level and personal learning style. Good luck!
