How to invite and manage recommenders on the Common App?

Hi everyone, I'm currently working on my Common App and I'm a bit confused about the process of inviting and managing recommenders. Can someone explain the steps and any tips for asking for recommendations from my teachers and counselor? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! Inviting and managing recommenders on the Common App is quite simple once you get the hang of it. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you out:

1. After logging into your Common App account, click on the "My Colleges" tab at the top.

2. Choose one of the colleges you've added to your list, and select the "Recommenders and FERPA" section on the left side of the page. Complete the FERPA waiver first – this is a requirement before you can invite recommenders.

3. In the "Recommenders and FERPA" section, you'll see various categories like Teacher, Counselor, and Other Recommenders. Click on the "+ Invite Recommender" button for the respective category.

4. Fill out their name, email address, and other information requested. You can also add a personal note to thank them and provide context for your request.

5. Once you've invited your recommenders, they will receive an email with instructions on how to submit their recommendations. You can check the status (“submitted” or “not submitted”) of their recommendation letters in the "Recommenders and FERPA" section.

As for asking for recommendations, here are some tips:

1. Make your request in person if possible. If not, send a polite and detailed email.

2. Ask your teachers/counselor well in advance (at least a month or more) before the deadline to give them ample time to write thoughtful letters.

3. Choose teachers who know you well and can speak to your strengths, preferably from your junior or senior year.

4. Provide your recommenders with a copy of your resume that highlights your accomplishments, extracurriculars, and personal interests. This will help teachers recall specific examples/details to include in their letters.

5. Once the letters are submitted, be sure to send a thank-you note to your teachers/counselor to show your appreciation for their time and support.

Best of luck with your college application process!
