Is a PSAT score of 1080 good?

Hi, I recently got back my PSAT results and scored a 1080. I was wondering if this is considered an okay score or if I need to put in more effort and try to improve? What is an average PSAT score that would keep me competitive when applying to colleges?

A PSAT score of 1080 is a decent starting point, and it certainly indicates that you have a good foundation to build upon. The average PSAT score tends to be around 950-1060, so you're already above the average. That said, it's important to recognize that the PSAT is not directly used for college admissions. Instead, it serves as a preliminary test to help you prepare and gauge your readiness for the actual SAT exam.

Colleges will look at your SAT or ACT scores during the application process, and that's what you want to focus on improving. To give yourself a better idea of where you stand, you can estimate what your SAT score might be based on your PSAT score. In general, an 1080 on the PSAT might translate to about a 1200 on the SAT. It's not a 1-to-1 conversion, but it can give you a rough idea of your current performance.

Competitive SAT scores for college admissions, especially at more selective schools, usually range from 1300 and higher. To improve your chances during the admissions process, it would be a good idea to invest time in studying and practice to raise your SAT score.

Consider using resources like the College Board's practice materials, Khan Academy, or CollegeVine for test preparation. Take practice tests, work on any weak areas, and if possible, consider guidance from a tutor or joining a study group.

Keep in mind, though, that the SAT is just one aspect of your college application. Colleges will also take into account your grades, extracurricular activities, personal essays, and more. Work on building a strong overall application to increase your chances of being accepted.

Good luck and happy studying!
