Inviting Common App Recommenders—Help!

I'm getting started on my college applications and I'm kind of confused about how the Common App recommender system works. How do I actually invite my teachers to write a recommendation for me? And can they see the list of colleges I'm applying to? Thanks for the help!

I understand that the Common App recommender system can be a bit confusing at first, but it's actually quite straightforward once you grasp the process. To invite your teachers to write a recommendation, follow these steps:

1. Log into your Common App account and click on the "My Colleges" tab.

2. On the left side of the page, you'll see a list of application sections. Select "Recommenders and FERPA." This will bring you to the page where you can manage your recommenders.

3. Under the "Teacher" heading, click on the "Invite Recommender" button. This will open up a form where you can enter your teacher's name and email address, as well as add an optional personal note to your invitation.

4. Fill out the form with the necessary information and then click on the "Send Invitation" button. This will send an email to your teacher with a unique link they can use to submit their recommendation.

Your teachers will not be able to see the specific list of colleges you are applying to through the Common App system. However, keep in mind that they may be able to deduce some of the schools based on the content of the recommendation and any additional forms they may be asked to complete.

It's always a good idea to talk to your recommenders in person before sending them the request through the Common App as a courtesy and to confirm that they are comfortable and available to write you a strong letter.

Additionally, providing them with your academic and extracurricular highlights, as well as some insight into your college goals, can help them craft a more personalized and compelling recommendation that strengthens your overall application.

Good luck with your applications, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions!
