Sonography internships for high school students?

Hey guys! I'm really interested in a career in medical sonography but it seems hard to find opportunities for high school students in this field. Does anyone know of any sonography internships available to high schoolers? I'm open to both in-person and virtual ones, so please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks!

Hello! It's fantastic that you're interested in medical sonography and want to explore the field further. While it might be challenging to find internships specifically geared towards high school students in this particular field, there are a few things you can try:

1. Shadow a professional: Look for sonographers or ultrasound technicians in your area and see if they would be open to letting you shadow them for a day or a week. You can usually find them working in hospitals, clinics or diagnostic imaging centers. Reach out to the facilities and express your interest in learning more about the profession.

2. Volunteering: Some hospitals or clinics may offer volunteer opportunities that, while not directly focused on sonography, can expose you to the medical environment and help you build connections with professionals. These programs often require you to help with administrative tasks, patient interactions, or other general duties that contribute to the facility's operations.

3. Summer medical programs: Some universities or organizations offer summer programs related to medical professions, which may include workshops, presentations, or hands-on experiences in various fields, sonography being one of them. While these programs may not exclusively focus on sonography, they can still provide valuable exposure and connections that may be useful in the future. You can find an initial list of such opportunities on CollegeVine's blog (https://blog.collegevine.com/medical-internships-for-high-school-students/), although some of them may not be geographically convenient fo you.

4. Local community colleges or trade schools: Some community colleges or trade schools that offer sonography programs may offer summer workshops, open houses, or allow observation of their class sessions. Reach out to these institutions to inquire about any opportunities they might have for high school students.

It can be challenging to find internships specifically in the sonography field for high school students, but these alternative pathways can still provide you with valuable experiences that help you take steps towards your desired career. Good luck!
