What concepts should I study for the Math ACT?

Hi guys, I'm preparing for the ACT, and I want to do well on the math section, but I'm not really sure what specific topics I need to study and what types of questions are typically asked. Any advice or resources for tackling the math portion of the ACT?

Hello! The Math section of the ACT covers a wide range of topics, so it's good to be familiar with as many concepts as possible. I'll list out the key concepts to study and also share some general advice for preparing for the Math section.

Concepts to study:

1. Pre-Algebra: Basic arithmetic, variables, exponents, square roots, scientific notation, absolute values, factors, ratios, percentages, and simple statistics (mean, median, mode)

2. Elementary Algebra: Solving linear equations (including systems of equations), quadratic equations, expressions, and inequalities; understanding properties of functions and linear graphs

3. Intermediate Algebra: Complex numbers, synthetic division, absolute value equations and inequalities, matrices, logarithmic and exponential functions, polynomials, sequences and series, and rational expressions

4. Coordinate Geometry: Slope, distance formula, midpoint, parabolas, linear equations, lines and slopes, circles, and graphing inequalities

5. Plane Geometry: Lines and angles, triangles, circles, polygons, congruency, similarity, area, perimeter, volume, and right triangles

6. Trigonometry: Right triangle trigonometry, basic identities, graphing trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, radians and degrees, angles of elevation and depression, and sine law and cosine law

While reviewing these concepts, make sure to focus on any areas where you feel you might struggle or need extra practice. To further prepare, try solving official ACT practice tests to familiarize yourself with the question styles and pacing of the exam. As you take these practice tests, review any questions you've answered incorrectly to better understand your mistakes and ensure you don't repeat them in the future.

Finally, don't forget to manage your time well on the ACT Math section, as you'll have 60 minutes to answer 60 questions. Keep practicing, identify your weak areas, and build your confidence for the test day. Good luck!
