Taking the PSAT in 8th grade: thoughts?

Hey everyone, I'm an 8th grader and was thinking about taking the PSAT as a way to start prepping early for college admissions. Is this a good idea, or should I wait until high school to start? Thanks for the input!

Hi there! It's awesome to see that you're already thinking about college admissions and preparing ahead of time. Taking the PSAT in 8th grade can give you a better understanding of the test format and where your strengths and weaknesses lie. This will give you more time to work on those areas and improve your skills before taking the PSAT again in high school (your junior year), where your performance can qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

However, keep in mind that your performance in 8th grade will not have an impact on your college applications - the PSAT as a whole doesn't, as colleges only consider your actual SAT (or ACT) score. Additionally, you might not have learned all the math, reading, and writing concepts covered in the PSAT by 8th grade, as some of the content is typically learned in high school classes.

If you decide to take the PSAT in 8th grade, treat it as a practice opportunity and focus on learning from the experience, rather than stressing about your score. And regardless of when you take it, remember that consistent preparation and studying are essential. Good luck and happy testing!
