Hi all, I'm currently choosing between NYU and Northwestern for a pre-med track. Can anyone who studied pre-med or a related major at either of these schools give me some insight into their experiences and how well these schools prepare students for the med school application process?
Hi there! Congrats on having acceptances to both NYU and Northwestern - those are both fantastic schools. I can give you a general overview of how each school might cater to a pre-med student, but keep in mind that this is not from firsthand experience.
Both NYU and Northwestern have strong pre-med programs and are well-regarded. Northwestern most likely has a slightly better reputation for pre-med in general, especially due to the connection to the Feinberg School of Medicine. Northwestern is known to have a supportive pre-med community and offers research opportunities, clinical experiences, and strong faculty mentorship. On top of that, the campus is located near several hospitals, giving pre-med students even more options for volunteering and shadowing experiences.
NYU is also a solid option for pre-med students, with access to the high-ranking NYU Langone Health school. The campus is located in New York City which provides numerous opportunities for clinical experience, research, and volunteer work at world-class hospitals and facilities.
When it comes to getting into medical school, your GPA and MCAT scores, along with research experience, volunteering, and shadowing, are very important. Both of these schools will offer plenty of resources and opportunities for you to succeed in the application process.
Some other factors to consider would be class sizes, financial aid packages, location, and your personal preference on campus atmosphere. Northwestern might offer a more traditional campus experience, while NYU has a more urban and decentralized campus. Ultimately, it's essential to think about which environment you would thrive in and aligns with your personal and academic goals.
Again, I didn't attend these universities, but I hope this overview provides some helpful context for making your decision. Good luck, and know that either choice will be a great foundation for your pre-med journey!
