AP Music Theory Worth It?

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about taking AP Music Theory next year because I really enjoy playing piano and it seems interesting. Can anyone who has taken it share their experiences? Will colleges appreciate it on my transcript?

Hey there! I'm glad you're interested in AP Music Theory, especially since you enjoy playing the piano. Students generally find the class be a really rewarding experience, which helps build your understanding of music concepts and improves your musicianship skills - from learning about harmony, counterpoint, and chord progressions to practicing sight-singing and dictation. The class can be quite challenging at times, but it's definitely worth it if you're passionate about music.

As for how colleges will view the class on your transcript, they likely won't see it as a core academic course, but it can still demonstrate your passion for music and balance with your other rigorous classes. Moreover, it can provide evidence that you're going beyond your comfort zone to explore new subjects, which is always a plus. Just make sure that taking the class doesn't hinder your ability to maintain strong grades in your core courses, as colleges prioritize those in terms of evaluating your academic readiness for college.

However, if you are considering applying to college as a music major, or even applying to performing arts colleges, then taking this class could indeed have a big impact on how admissions officers evaluate your academic credentials, as in that case it would be directly relevant to the core of your academic experience.

Overall, if you enjoy music and are willing to put in the time and effort, AP Music Theory is a great choice!
