Hello everyone! I'm a high school junior currently researching liberal arts colleges in NY. Bard and Skidmore seem to offer similar experiences but I'm not sure which one would be best for me. Does anyone have any insight on the general atmosphere, academics, or social life at either of these schools? Thanks in advance!
Hello! It's great that you're researching liberal arts colleges, and you're correct that Bard and Skidmore have similarities. However, they do have some differences that might make one more appealing to you, depending on your interests and preferences.
Academics:
Both colleges are known for their strong liberal arts programs, offering a variety of majors and interdisciplinary options. Bard's curriculum is more focused on the arts and humanities, though, whereas Skidmore has broader academic offerings, including sciences and pre-professional programs. Bard also has a unique first-year experience called the Language and Thinking Program, where students engage in intensive writing, reading, and discussion to introduce them to the intellectual culture of Bard.
Campus atmosphere:
While both colleges are located in upstate New York, their environments differ. Bard's campus is situated in a rural area near the Hudson River, which exudes a more secluded, retreat-like atmosphere. Skidmore, on the other hand, is in the city of Saratoga Springs, a beautiful and vibrant small city with access to restaurants, shops, and recreational opportunities. Skidmore's campus is more integrated with the local community, and offers a mix of urban and suburban experiences.
Social life:
At both schools, the social scene is fairly laid-back, with an emphasis on cultural events, performances, and gatherings. However, the vibe can be different on each campus. Bard is known for its quirky, intellectual, and artsy student body, with a strong presence of musicians, actors, and writers. Skidmore has a more diverse mix of students, in terms of both interests and backgrounds, which can contribute to a range of social activities and events.
Ultimately, choosing between Bard and Skidmore will depend on your preferences for location, academic focus, and campus atmosphere. If possible, I'd recommend visiting both campuses and talking to current students to get a better feel for each school. Also, consider sitting in on a class or attending an event to experience the academic environment firsthand.
By immersing yourself in both campuses, you'll likely gain clearer insights into which college will be the best fit for you. And remember, unless you decide you want to apply Early Decision, you can always apply to both schools and give yourself more time to decide!
Good luck with your decision!
