TI-84 vs TI-Nspire: Which calculator should I get?

Hi everyone, I'm planning to buy a new graphing calculator. I'm stuck between the TI-84 and the TI-Nspire. I'd like to know what are the pros and cons of each and which one would be better for high school and college math courses. Also, I'm curious if either calculator is allowed on standardized tests like the SAT and ACT. Thanks!

Hello! Both the TI-84 and TI-Nspire are great options for high school and college math courses, but they have different features that may align more with your personal preferences.

The TI-84 is a solid choice, used widely by high school and college students. It features a simple user interface, making it easy to learn and operate. Additionally, it boasts strong capabilities for graphing and statistical analysis. TI-84 has an extensive library of community-built programs and functions which could be helpful for specific courses. It is widely accepted on standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, and AP exams.

On the other hand, the TI-Nspire has more advanced features than the TI-84 and is considered a higher-end option. It offers a more powerful processor speed and a larger, higher-resolution display, making graphing even more precise. The TI-Nspire allows you to create and manipulate documents, save your work, and organize files using its built-in file-management system. However, the user interface could be considered more complex than the TI-84, which may take some time to learn, although this makes it highly customizable. Also, the TI-Nspire CAS (Computer Algebra System) version is not allowed on the SAT and ACT, but the non-CAS version is allowed.

In summary, if you're looking for a powerful and customizable calculator with a more advanced feature set, you may prefer the TI-Nspire. However, if you want a simpler interface with strong graphing and statistical capabilities that is widely accepted on standardized tests, the TI-84 would be a better fit for you. Good luck with your decision!
