Bates vs Colby: How to make the right choice?

Hey guys! I'm struggling to decide between Bates College and Colby College. I'd love to hear some opinions or experiences regarding academics, social life, and campus atmosphere at both schools. Any input from current students or alumni would be super helpful. Thank you in advance!

Hey there! Congratulations on being accepted to both Bates and Colby! I'm sure you'll thrive at whichever school you ultimately choose, and it’s worth noting that these two institutions are quite similar in many ways. However, there are of course differences, and understanding them can help you make a more informed decision.

Academics: Both Bates and Colby offer a strong liberal arts education with small class sizes, and prioritize helping students form strong relationships with professors. However, there may be differences in the departments they're most recognized for. Colby is known for its environmental studies program, while Bates has a great reputation for its arts and humanities programs. While they both provide a solid educational foundation, think about which areas interest you the most and check out the specific course offerings on each college's website. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Bates has a short-term program in the spring, which allows students to take just a single class for a few weeks - if this setup appeals to you, Bates might be the place for you, as not many schools have something comparable.

Social life: Both schools have small, close-knit communities with similar student populations, but their social scenes can vary. Bates tends to have a more relaxed and inclusive atmosphere, while Colby has a more active Greek life presence, with secret societies and various social clubs. However, both schools also boast outdoor clubs and lots of intramural sports, so consider what kind of social environment you would thrive in.

Campus atmosphere: Bates is located in the city of Lewiston, offering a more urban environment with access to off-campus activities and amenities. Colby, on the other hand, is situated in Waterville, a small town with a more rural setting. The campus atmosphere at both schools is welcoming and supportive, so you should mainly consider how important access to an urban environment is for you.

It would be great if you could visit both campuses, as well. If you can't, try attending virtual events and speaking to current students to get a better feel for the atmosphere and culture at each school.

Ultimately, the decision comes down to personal preference and what you're looking for in your college experience. Give serious thought to what's most important to you, and trust that you'll make the best choice for yourself. Good luck!
